R&D Activities

R&D activities

R&D is an integral part of our organisation and we believe it should be connected to the customer, rather than alienated. We invest our resources in investigation and testing to develop new sustainable materials and enhance the existing ones.

Our R&D activities encompass a variety of initiatives, including the development of novel products, processes, and technical solutions. We conduct research within the framework of our EU-funded research and innovation projects. Additionally, we provide technical support to our clients and offer education and training programs focused on the principles and applications of bioeconomy.

R&B ACTIVITIES

Compounding

Bio-Mi has successfully developed and introduced its initial product, “MI3,” a starch-based compound suitable for various applications. Additionally, we have launched two new environmentally friendly thermoplastic compounds: “MI6,” based on PLA, and “MI9,” derived from PHA. These blends are now available on the market, offering biodegradable and compostable solutions in line with our commitment to sustainability.

Our objective is to optimise and further upscale the production of 3 different bioplastic blends/compounds with 9 different certified variations based on a wide range of bio-polymers, degradable polyesters and co-polyesters such as PLA, PBAT, PHAs, PCL, TPS, PBS, monomers/oligomers, additives, chain extenders, compatibilizers, nucleating agents, fillers etc.

The development of these formulations is not arbitrary; rather, it is a deliberate response to market demands. Recognizing the growing trend towards environmentally conscious practices, Bio-Mi has committed to offering sustainable solutions to businesses seeking to transition to greener alternatives and move away from fossil-based products. By doing so, we aim to engage a broader range of stakeholders in the global effort to mitigate the adverse environmental impacts associated with traditional fossil fuel-derived materials. Leveraging our expertise in the research and development of advanced thermoplastic materials, we are able to cater to diverse industries with a wide array of bio-based products capable of replacing their fossil counterparts. Our primary focus lies in providing compostable alternatives to disposable plastics, thereby contributing to a more sustainable future.

BIO-MI LTD.

Material coordinate system for bioplastics

Not every blend/composition is biodegradable under every condition and Bio-Mi will be one of the few companies in EU that can offer different end-of-life options for each materal/product.

What is bioplastics ?

Bioplastics are not just one single substance,
they comprise of a whole family of materials
with differing properties and applications.
Currently, bioplastics accounts for less than 1 %
of the more than 390 million tonnes of plastic
produced annually.

Any formulation obtained by extrusion and compounding technologies, whether the result of our own R&D activities or project activities, is extruded into films on a lower TRL scale, and later upscaled on a larger TRL scale and re-analyzed to determine changes and optionally alter certain process parameters or polymer ratio, all for the purpose of maximizing film properties and process optimization. In addition to the extrusion itself, we can apply a bio-based coating to the obtained substrates, which is often added in order to emphasize a property that the final product should have, depending on the application. Each result of our own research is documented, stored in a database and used later in various analyzes required for taylor made applications according to the customer requirements.
